KevJumba (Kevin Wu)
Essendle Status: Esssential
Genre: Comedy, EntertainmentWhat can we say about Kevin Wu, famously known as KevJumba on YouTube? Well, let’s start in 2007, probably around age 16 when he began posting videos of himself on YouTube. Although he may not like to be called “adorable” or “cute” anymore, as he already expressed his distaste for these terms in the video “Friend Zone ft. Jamie Chung,” there really isn’t anything better to describe his appearance when he was younger.
But of course, being cute or adorable alone cannot get you the kind of attraction that Kevin’s gained over the years. Even when he was a teenager, Kevin proved himself to produce quality videos that are quite funny, creative, entertaining, and surprisingly, thought-provoking. Even as a kid, you can sense by watching his videos that he’s got the confidence and personality that make it difficult to look away. There is something oddly sincere and honest about his videos too. As you watch him and his dad Michael Wu AKA PapaJumba (yes Kevin involves his dad in his videos), you begin to like the kid and it’s hard to figure out exactly why. Additionally, he is a multi-talented, obviously an intelligent individual but one that can sing and dance as well. Just check out one of his earlier videos called “backyard” and also “Nice Guys” by Kevin and his YouTube friends such as Ryan Higa and Chester See.
Kevin is no longer a teenage boy and he sure doesn’t look like one. Over the last 5 years, he has grown so much both physically and mentally, and it’s quite exciting to see his growth. He is still the same Kevin we know, however, still expressing his opinions (with a lot of comedy) about things that he finds “interesting, weird, or irritating” as described by Jeff Yang of the San Francisco Chronicle. Nevertheless, Kevin’s popularity on YouTube soared very quickly along with his height.
To give you an idea, Kevin had become 1 of 3 East Asians under the age of 21 to be in the top 5 of YouTube’s all-time most subscribed user by May 2008 and within 1 month, he was the number 1 subscribed comedian on all of YouTube. Notably, he has garnered to date over 3 million subscribers and 330 million video views between his main and 2nd YouTube channels. Speaking of Kevin’s 2nd YouTube channel, which is called the JumbaFund, Kevin dedicates this channel to charity where he donates his proceeds earned from advertisement. That speaks volumes Kevin!
Apart from his YouTube channels, Kevin played a key role in “Hooking Up” (2008), a web series by HBO Labs, consisting of YouTubers such as Jessica Lee Rose and Philip DeFranco. Kevin also took part in another web series called “Funemployed” (2010), a web series starring Kevin, Wong Fu Productions and members of the YTF (Kevin is also a member of the YTF). In 2010, Kevin and his father Michael competed in the 17th season of The Amazing Race, placing 7th out of 11 teams. Pretty good for a father-and-son effort!
Although Kevin continues to consider YouTube as his home ground, he has lately extended his popularity to TV and film. Kevin is currently hosting pre-commercials for Flicks, a movie-airing part of the Cartoon Network. We will also see Kevin as a character name Danny in “Rock Jocks” (2012), which is an independent film due to release very soon. But that’s not all! Kevin is also working on another film in Hawaii called “Hang Loose” with Dante Basco and Justin Chon! You can check out behind the scene footages on Kevin’s 2nd channel JumbaFund.

I have been watching these videos whole day (the whole week, actually). Seriously? I’m so— I don’t even need to say it anymore.
Anyway, it’s not all bad because this channel donates money to charity for every view it gets. So I’m basically contributing for the welfare of others by just doing this lazy crap. Ha ha ha. Think about that.
